Swedish Massage vs Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage and Swedish Massage are two of the most loved massage therapy modalities practiced today. Despite the popularity of both types of massage, there is still much confusion for many people when they are asked this question:
Would you like a sweedish massage or deep tissue massage?
At first glance this simple question may seem to indicate that the difference between the two massage modalities is that a swedish massage simply lacks pressure. The truth however, is that Swedish Massage can be performed with a great deal of pressure, or with lighter pressure depending on the clients needs.
So what is the real difference in Swedish vs Deep Tissue?
First lets take a look at Swedish Massage.
Swedish Massage is a very comfortable and relaxing style of massage that uses five styles of long, circular and flowing strokes to massage the bodies soft tissue. Great for relaxing stressed or overworked muscles, Swedish massage also enhances the circulation of blood throughout your entire body while promoting good health, and assisting you in letting go and relaxing.
Deep Tissue Massage on the other hand, is a massage modality focused on relieving severe tension and pain in muscles and the deeper connective tissues or fascia. Deep tissue massage is aimed at the muscles below the surface and top layer muscles. Deep Tissue massage is typically recommended for athletes, individuals with constant pain, or patients who are recovering from a specific injury. Common deep tissue massages are focused on relieving pain in the neck, arms, legs, and thighs. Deep pressure should be expected with this type of massage, and while any pain should be reported, it is not uncommon for muscle ache to replace pain for a few days after a massage.
Difference Between Swedish vs Deep Tissue
Simply put, Swedish massage promotes relaxation and deep tissue massage is used to unknot deeper stressed muscles. In a Swedish Massage the therapist will use long flowing massage strokes, pressure and circular movement to enhance the circulatory system. Deep Tissue on the other hand is much more focused on relieving stress in an area of the body that hurts really bad.
Essentially, Swedish massage is done with long circular movement for relaxation and improved circulation, while deep tissue is focused on one area to unknot stressed muscles.
